Avalanche Course

This is the course for you if you enjoy ski touring and want to learn about avalanche hazards.

We focus on ski touring in avalanche-prone terrain, route selection, companion rescue using transceiver, shovel, and probe, and how you can independently assess avalanche risks based on observations and available information.

Course Location: Courses can be held at Brokke, Bjørnevasshytta, and Hovden, all suitable locations in Setesdal.

Duration: 2 days

Day 1:

Theory:

  • Trip planning.
  • Avalanche and weather forecasts.
  • Overview of essential equipment for tours in steep terrain.

Practical tasks:

  • Transceiver check.
  • Snow profiles and route selection.
  • Identifying areas protected from weather and wind.
  • Anticipating danger signals and terrain traps.
  • Ski techniques in off-piste terrain.

Day 2:

Theory:

  • Assessing steep terrain.
  • What to do if you witness an avalanche.
  • Transceiver search.

Practical experience on a tour:

  • Transceiver check.
  • Multi-victim transceiver search.
  • Kick turns and safe route selection.
  • Off-piste skiing.
